The Opportunity

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Media Technologist to work for a prestigious Drama School which is part of the University of London.

The Media Technologist (Digital Environments) is responsible, in conjunction with the Media Technology Manager and Media Technologist (Filmmaking), for the organisation, maintenance and occasional supervision of Centrals Media resources; and for staffing the day-to-day operation of the Media equipment loans system, equipment stores and three video edit suites.

You will provide expert consultative advice, equipment demonstration, small group workshops and related training materials to facilitate and enhance student and staff members use of Media resources. Specifically, the post will support creative use of projection and digital display software and hardware; and facilitate exploration of established and emerging live performance technology such as: sensor triggers, media servers, XR/AR/VR devices, 3d games engine scenography, immersive audio and visual spaces and interactive use of mobile devices.

You will also provide vital creative advice and support to live performances, short film shoots and installations; the posts work location is split between the Media Office and campus spaces for rehearsal, performance, filming and exhibition with occasional day work off site.

Integral to the role is the efficient physical and data management of incoming and outgoing loan equipment in a busy environment, maintaining effective lines of verbal and written communication with students and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide advice, instruction, supervision and mentoring to students working on productions, projects and course work.
Provide reactive support for students using edit suites and other lab facilities.
Deliver student inductions as necessary and maintain induction records.
Provide support and deliver inductions to students, staff, and visiting lecturers/professionals in Media such as projectors, mapping and digital display software, multimedia sensors and triggers and AR and XR devices.
Work with academic staff and the IT team to support the development of Media innovation and literacy in relation to our Academic Strategy.
Gathers information from a multiple sources, analyses and critiques it before making a decision. Compares and contracts situation and information identifying patterns and trends which inform subsequent decisions.
Frequently convey verbal and written information that needs careful explanation and/or interpretation and consider how best to help others understand;
Explain terminology and procedures in such a way that enables others to understand and engage.
Oversee and supervise student work on productions and projects offering support and guidance as and when required.
Install temporary Media technical systems and equipment in locations within and external to the School
Manage the administration and execution of equipment loans bookings and all related communications
Provide advice and assistance to prospective people who may use our facilities, resources and supervisory requirements.
Advise on the development of Media technologies and techniques, including updating of equipment and practices.
Monitor and organise stock in line with the consumables budget and maintain equipment store housekeeping in liaison with Media Manager.
Maintain and repair equipment, including a planned programme of replacement.
Implement protocols relating to your area and in line with School policies.
To provide advice to the Media Manager and Head of Technical Production with regard to requirements of productions, projects and other coursework.
Contribute effectively to the wider Technical Production department.
Coordinate and delegate work fairly to student teams based on individual ability.
Help student teams focus on specific tasks, help coordinate effort and motivation of all team members, clarifying requirements as and when required.
Work productively and collaboratively with other departments e.g. IT, Estates. Teaching and Learning.
Train others in the use of equipment as and when required.
Establish and build effective communication channels with Academic Staff, the IT team and relevant partner organisations in liaison with direct colleagues and the wider Technical Production department.
Actively participate in internal networks to help build relationships between departments and to achieve a common purpose.
Organise and allocate resources appropriate to the needs of the curriculum and Academic Strategy.
Ensure the secure storage and safe use of equipment.
Deliver the TP Media programme of planned maintenance, including the Portable Appliance Testing of all equipment on the departmental inventory.
Take responsibility for collaborative decisions.
Assess the effect of decisions made for all users of digital performance systems and beyond.
Be aware of relationship between own decisions and decision-making of others and their potential effect on students learning.
Monitor and be pro-active in reporting potential issues in relation to protocols and procedures, reporting issues to the Media Manager as and when appropriate.
Resolve and apply creative solutions to planning and process problems, approaching the problem from different perspectives.
Judge when to listen, when to give advice or guidance and when to refer to professional help.
Carry out tasks which require a range of physical or sensory techniques.
Take responsibility for Health and Safety and the safe operation of venues, studios and other spaces and activities therein.
Ensure that risk assessments are kept up to date and explained to all parties as and when required.

Based in North West London, salary is £35,583- £39,389 per annum, plus excellent benefits including 35 days holiday p.a., pension and Life Assurance, interest free season ticket loan +++

Your skills and experience

The successful candidate will have a degree in a creative technology subject or related subject or equivalent in other qualifications and experience.
Experience in hands on collaboration and consultation with performance makers to create and coordinate equipment lists, specifications and technical system digital environment designs for productions, installations and films.
Experience in 1st line maintenance of all aspects of media equipment and ability to create and follow schemes for organisation, housekeeping and stock management of stores.
Exposure to an HE creative arts community as a technician, lecturer, freelance professional or student and empathetic understanding of pedagogical practice.
Workshop teaching and demonstrating digital environment making skills and use of related creative software, both in person and online. Including the creation of text and online video materials for equipment induction and software instruction.
Mentoring and supervision of digital environment creation for use in live performance projects and short film production.
Established relationships with industry creatives and suppliers and track record of developing practice and subject knowledge in line with industry trends.
Excellent working knowledge of current health and safety standards and legislation within a production environment.

System design/rigging/operation, data and content manipulation applicable to live performance, which may include:
- Networking in a range of environments: Media server, Dante, Video over IP, Windows, Mac , Linux,
